The first game was torn to shreds for many reasons, so Obsidian took it to heart and decided to change everything about the formula based on the feedback from the player base. I can go on and on, but you get the point. So now you have a ship that's both important to the plot and gameplay. Cad Nua was also criticized for being tacked on and not being all that relevant to the plot. So Deadfire places the factions at the forefront of the plot, and what ending you get will wildly vary based on which faction you support. PoE1 was criticized for having bland and uninteresting factions that don't have much of an impact on the narrative. So Deadfire simplifies this to about 3 sentence per character and every is also narrated so people can follow it more easily. First game was criticized for having too much text. So now characters are quip machines and settings is far more light-hearted. First game was criticized for taking itself too seriously and often being too dry and boring. So now the second game gives you all the reason in the world, while also cranking up the stakes to 11, and making it feel more "epic" in scope. The first game's story was criticized for being too low stakes and not giving you enough of a reason to go after Thaos. The voice acting was also criticized for being too sparse and inconsistent, where a character would start a sentence voiced, but would end it silently. People hated the lack of mutli-classing, so it became a thing in Deadfire. People hated the combat in PoE1, so Obsidian revamped it. Any change in Deadfire can be attributed to how much people complained about the first game. Deadfire was a straight up improvement in that regard, so much so that even Codexians agree. Most people agree that the combat in the first game was not all that good and downright tedious at times. >No revamped combat system as it was perfect
